WHPP joins the IIHF’s #InspireTheNext Campaign

22nd March 2023, Ljubljana – The Women’s Hockey Partnership for Progress project, together with national ice hockey associations of Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia supports the International Ice Hockey Federation’s campaign Inspire The Next which was officially launched today.

The campaign is aimed to inspire women to get involved in ice hockey, both on and off the ice. The main objective of the campaign is to elevate the stories within the women’s game in terms of participation, awareness, and professional opportunities. While women’s ice hockey has grown in participation by almost 30,000 registered players in the past five years, the IIHF continues to work on recruiting the next generation of women in the game, whether players, officials, and coaches, or other supporting roles. Although the female game has made advances around the globe, the growing popularity of team sports among girls and women still offers numerous undeveloped opportunities.

The objectives of the #InspireTheNext campaign go hand-in-hand with the objectives of the WHPP project to promote and advance the game of women’s ice hockey within the Danube region. Over the next three year various events and activities in the region will be organized contributig to these goals – one of them already next month when the city of Maribor will host 1st WHPP Ice Hockey Festival and Academy.

“Being able to participate on behalf of the WHPP at this top level event in women’s ice hockey was not merely beneficial to the visibility of the project itself, but also offered us significant exchange of ideas and know-how that we can implement in the project over the next three years,” added Muhić while already looking ahead to the upcoming first WHPP Academy in Maribor (SLO) later this year.

The two-day Summit focused on various aspects of the women’s game, including promotion and marketing which essential for attracting young girls to the sport. “In regions where women’s ice hockey is under-developed, we need larger focus on promotion to break with some stereotypes associated to girls taking up this sport,” said Dejan Kontrec reminding that ice hockey is still to often considered as male sport and visibility of women’s ice hockey is largely inter-linked with success in men’s hockey. “Hopefully, we can make some changes for the better with WHPP in the Danube region,” concluded Kontrec at the end of the conference in Budapest.
